Feb 4th, 2013 Downtown Summerside is spearheading a new community celebration focusing on Chinese New Year festivities.

The organization is launching the new initiative to bring community members, newcomers, and families together in the celebration of Chinese culture. Downtown retailers are on board, decorating storefront windows and offering special retail promotions to mark the event.

"As downtown merchants, we wanted to do something a little different than our regular patrons are used to and at the same time reflect new cultures that have a presence in Summerside," said Reasha Walsh, chairman of Downtown Summerside’s marketing committee. "The downtown is the heart of every community and we want to show that our downtown is a welcoming space for all citizens and visitors."

The celebration runs from Feb. 4 to 10 and will feature several events throughout the week.

In China, small gifts or tokens are given out in red envelopes in the name of prosperity and participating merchants here will have red envelopes containing coupons, surprise savings and Chinese proverbs.

"We have a variety of community partners helping to pull this event together, from cultural groups to local businesses, as well as enthusiastic individuals who are sharing their knowledge of Chinese heritage," Walsh said. "One of Downtown Summerside's goals is to be a dynamic place that encourages people to work, play shop and dine with us. We feel that events like this achieve that objective."

Throughout the festival, Samuel’s Coffee House will incorporate symbolic food themes into its daily menu specials. They will also have red envelopes for their customers, some containing Chinese proverbs while other will have special discounts and free products.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, the Spotlight Theatre Company will host Chinese-themed children’s activities from 9 to 11 a.m.

Also on Saturday, the Summerside Farmer’s Market will have cultural dances, music and displays as well as retail promotions from participating vendors.

On Sunday, Feb. 10, the Rotary Library will host a craft-making exhibit to celebrate the Year of the Snake.

HMS Office Supplies will have promotional specials dealing with the lucky number 8 theme and will be giving away a limited number of coupons in red envelopes.
