OFF TO MARKET WE GO...

Summerside - It was one-stop shopping for local fruits, vegetables, art, crafts and many things in between on the weekend. Saturday was the opening day of the Summerside Farmer's Market, located in the basement of the Dominion Square building on Water Street. Vendors were in many of the available spaces, and a large crowd throughout the morning seemed receptive to the concept.

"I've been to the one in Halifax, and this is just as good," said Summerside's Garfield MacLean. "There just seems to be fresher herbs and vegetables. We'll be back for sure."

Shoppers could enjoy a meal made on the spot and a fair-trade coffee, as they browsed the crafts, fresh flowers and other items, produced directly from the shops and farms of P.E.I. Local producers have been feeling the need for Islanders to buy more local products and they seem to be answering the call with new markets popping up in various locations around P.E.I., said Arthur Davies, coowner of Emmerdale Eden Farm.

"There's a real buzz in the air," he said "It's like there was a crying need out there and then, here it is. It's just tremendous what Summerside and SRDC have done here."

The market will be open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The entrance can be found at the back parking lot of the building.
