STUDENT HOUSING MEETINGHomeowners, property owners, developers and anyone else with a room to spare will have an opportunity to take part in a plan to provide accommodations for students enrolling at the new Holland College Summerside Waterfront Campus. Arnold Croken, executive director of the Summerside Regional Development Corporation (SRDC), along with representatives from Holland College, will be hosting a public information session next week to outline the accommodation needs students will have.
“We’re responding to some inquiries we got from people in the Summerside area that wondered if anybody had information on what the general expectation level is of that student market,” Croken said. “How should buildings be equipped to cater to that opportunity when you talk about single residences and co-ed residences? We decided rather than try to answer individual questions on a call-by-call basis, we should make it broader than that and just let anyone that either has a house or if they want to remodel for that market or build something, put the questions directly to the college.”
Croken said there is a time element coming into play because the Summerside campus opens to students in September and this information session is way to eliminate some of the red tape and put the project on the fast track. “About a month ago or less, they were talking at least 160 plus students that were enrolled in the program here in Summerside in September that weren’t from Prince County,” Croken said. “This means there are people coming into town to take the courses.”
